Retainers are essential after orthodontic treatment to maintain your results and prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions. There are three main types of retainers. Hawley retainers are the traditional removable type made of acrylic and metal wire, durable and adjustable but more visible. Clear retainers (sometimes called Essix or Vivera) are made of transparent plastic similar to Invisalign aligners, virtually invisible but generally less durable. Fixed retainers are thin wires bonded permanently behind the front teeth, providing constant retention without requiring patient compliance, though they require careful flossing.

Most patients wear retainers full-time for several months after orthodontic treatment completes, then transition to nighttime-only wear, which is typically required indefinitely to prevent shifting. Retention requirements vary based on age, the type of orthodontic treatment, and individual factors like bite and tooth movement patterns. Lost or broken retainers should be replaced immediately because even a few weeks without retention can allow teeth to shift, sometimes requiring orthodontic re-treatment to correct.
